Head of Department at DTU Chemistry receives international award

For more than 30 years Professor and Head of Department at DTU Chemistry, Erling H. Stenby, has been an active researcher and supervised students and PhD’s in the area of applied thermodynamics concerning energy resources engineering. Now, he has been awarded the "2021 SPE Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty" for his great efforts.

“It is a huge honour to receive this prize and I especially owe many thanks to my great colleagues in DTU CERE and to the group of highly respected SPE members who nominated me,” says Erling H. Stenby, who was the initiator of the Center for Energy Resources Engineering – CERE and a current member of the Steering Committee.

The prize  “SPE Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty” recognizes superiority in classroom teaching, excellence in research, significant contributions to the petroleum engineering profession and/or special effectiveness in advising and guiding students.

When it comes to guiding students Erling H. Stenby has always been very committed. He played a key role when DTU established the MSc program in Petroleum Engineering and today the university ranks number 3 within this topic according to the QS World University Rankings.

“Some people might wonder why we need research in oil and gas in the middle of our green transition. The reason is, that this knowledge is needed to support a sustainable future – for example, we have a lot of focus on how to store CO2 in old oil fields or other suitable geological formations. We also support the development of geothermal energy, as well as generic research within applied thermodynamics, colloid and interface science, and large scale simulations” says Erling, who has been very active in the area of CO2-storage and capture for more than 20 years.

The prize is awarded during the 2021 Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in Dubai in September.
