Seminar with Professor Edmond Magner

Title: "Bioelectrochemistry: Some Fundamentals and Applications"

By Professor Edmond Magner,
University of Limerick,
Ireland

Abstract:
The use of redox enzymes in sensors and biofuel cells has expanded significantly with substantial growth in both fundamental and applied research. Fundamental research work has led to significant commercial success, though this is predominantly in clinical areas such as the development of glucose biosensors to aid patients with diabetes. This seminar will focus on aspects of the development of commercial applications, highlighting some of the challenges that arise with the development of personal glucose sensors in the challenging matrix of whole blood. Factors such as the nature of the ions used (K+ versus Na+) on the response of sensors will be described using the Hofmeister series. Recent work on the use of nanoporous supports for the development of biofuel cells and of biocatalytic reactors will be described.
