Centre for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE) at DTU Chemistry seeks a PhD student in the general direction of modelling thermodynamic properties of complex mixtures. CERE is a cross departmental centre ( The CERE group at DTU Chemistry is focused on applied physical chemistry, phase behaviour, and fluid properties where a fundamental understanding of chemistry, physics, and mathematical tools is needed. The primary application areas are within energy resources such as oil and gas production, petroleum processing, carbon dioxide storage, and geothermal energy. The research activities at CERE DTU Chemistry cover experimental investigations modelling of phase equilibrium, and thermophysical, properties, as well as development of efficient algorithms for phase equilibrium calculations and reactive transport.

Responsibilities and tasks
Modelling thermodynamic properties and phase behaviour is routinely needed in various aspects of modern process design and simulation. Modern analytical tools can provide more detailed characterization for mixtures but the information is yet to be fully utilized in the thermodynamic modelling of these mixtures. For example, modern GCxGC technology provides detailed information on complex petroleum mixtures but the impact of the additional information on phase behaviour modelling is not properly evaluated and the methodology how to include the additional information is to be developed. Meanwhile, advanced thermodynamic models accounting for more molecular characteristics are used more frequently today but application of these models seldom utilize the available information from modern analytical tools. The PhD student will work mainly on how to utilize the rich information from modern analytical tools to better characterize complex mixtures, some maybe ill-defined, in modelling of their thermodynamic properties and phase behaviour. The project may involve some experimental analysis work although the main focus will be modelling. The PhD student is also expected to use or further develop advanced thermodynamic models to improve the state-of-the-art in estimating thermodynamic properties or calculating phase behaviour.

Candidates should have a MSc degree or equivalent in chemical engineering, chemistry, petroleum engineering, or mathematics.

  • scientific production and research potential at international level
  • innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
  • the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of internal and external cooperation

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years starting as soon as possible (or according to mutual agreement).
