A position as platform engineer is available at DTU Chemistry from October 1, 2017. The position relates to the Danish Research Infrastructure for Chemical Biology, DK-OPENSCREEN.

The research infrastructure will serve as a platform for open access to screening of chemical compounds for biological activity. It will also include the curating of a national screening library to support the identification of compounds with potentials for chemical biology research and early drug discovery. DK-OPENSCREEN is a national partnership that in addition to DTU currently include the University of Copenhagen, Aalborg University and Aarhus University.

Responsibilities and tasks
The platform engineer will be responsible for establishing and maintaining the national compound library for biological screening. The duties will include acquiring and servicing the infrastructure equipment, designing and procuring screening compounds for the collection, data management, production and shipping of assay-ready plates. Additionally, the platform engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of DK-OPENSCREEN at DTU and will liaise with national and international collaborators and users.

Primary areas of responsibility 

  • Acquiring and maintaining equipment for compounds storage, QA/QC and plating
  • Selecting and analyzing screening compounds for the collection
  • Daily management of the infrastructure, including the platform equipment
  • Administration relating to platform finances, partners and users
  • Maintaining communication for the infrastructure, including an online presence
  • Organizing collaborations within and outside of the infrastructure.
Other content of the position:
  • Training users of the platform
  • Limited travel is to be expected.

Candidates should 

  • Have an MSc or PhD degree in chemistry with a strong theoretical and experimental background in organic and analytical chemistry.
  • Be organized and committed to providing assistance and service to platform users.
  • Have enthusiasm for curating analytical and screening data.
  • Possess independence, be self-motivated and have good communication skills.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience with organic synthesis, ideally with a background in medicinal chemistry or high-throughput screening, an interest in chemical biology and the desire to work in a highly dynamic environment.

Candidates should have a thorough interest in high-throughput screening and the interpretation of biological data. Experience with analytical and preparative HPLC is a requirement. Prior experience with chemoinformatics tools will be an advantage. The position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary environment with many outside contacts.

  • Commitment to a position, where multitasking and putting the users first is paramount
  • Ability to be part of a team consisting of technical and academic personnel while also interacting with students.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and good communication skills.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
