2 PhD scholarships available at DTU Chemistry within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “COSINE: Computational Spectroscopy in Natural Sciences and Engineering

Two 3-year PhD scholarships in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Spectroscopy are available at the Division for Theoretical, Computational and Femtochemistry, Department of Chemistry, Technical University of Denmark, under the supervision of Prof. Sonia Coriani and the co-supervision of Prof. Klaus Braagaard Møller. The scholarships are funded by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “COSINE: Computational Spectroscopy in Natural Sciences and Engineering”, H2020-MSCA-ITN-765739.

The projects will be conducted in close collaboration with at least one of the other COSINE research groups, and extended stays in these groups are required. Secondments to participating industrial partners during the training program are also mandatory. Beside their individual research training, the COSINE PhD students will receive specific additional training in complementary skills, like, e.g., management and communication, and will participate to a number of planned schools and network events. They will become fully qualified for careers in either academia or industry, with the mobility component further contributing to their future employability.
COSINE is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network directly addressing the need for high-level training and career paths in Theoretical/Computational Chemistry with special emphasis on Computational Spectroscopy, which has become an important scientific
pillar in chemical research. COSINE aims at devising novel theoretical tools and computational codes rooted in Electronic Structure Theory for the investigation of organic photochemistry to enable accurate simulation of spectroscopic experiments on the computer.

COSINE is coordinated by Heidelberg University in Germany and involves, beside DTU and Heidelberg, KTH-Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, LMU-Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, SNS-Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, ENSCP-École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris, NTNU-Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, and SDU-University of Southern Denmark. External partners in the project for secondments and training are Electro-magnetic Geoservice ASA (Norway), Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. (Italy), eXact Lab SRL (Italy), BioTools Inc. (USA), Dell S.p.A. (Italy), NVIDIA (Germany), PDC Center for High Performance Computing (Sweden), and the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Trieste (Italy).
Responsibilities and tasks
You will be engaged in development and application of novel in silico methodologies to investigate advanced spectroscopic effects. Both formal developments, code implementation and applications are expected.

The general objectives of the two projects are summarized below:

Project 1: Development of standard and damped response-theory based approaches routed on the coupled cluster (CC) family of wave-function approximations to simulate linear and non-linear spectroscopies in the highly energetic X-ray region, as well as photoionization/photodetachment processes and photoelectron spectroscopy. Application of the methods to different representative case studies.

Project 2: Development of standard and damped response-theory based approaches and protocols (both CC and DFT) to simulate non-linear spectroscopies in presence of external/internal magnetic fields, and chiral spectroscopies of molecular species in excited states. Application of the methods to different representative case studies.

Extended stays and/or secondments at (at least) one of the other COSINE research groups and external partners and participation to the network activities of the training program are mandatory.
We seek two highly motivated, talented students with interest in theoretical and computational chemistry. Strong background in physical chemistry, quantum mechanics, theoretical chemistry and/or physics, applied mathematics or computer science is an advantage. A Master degree in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, or related fields is required by the start of the Ph.D. programme (indicatively Sept. 1, 2018), but not necessary at the time of application.
The applicants should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hardworking. Good communication skills in both written and spoken English are expected.

Due to the regulations of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie programme, mobility is mandatory: the candidates shall not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than twelve months during the three years prior to the recruitment date (indicatively Sept. 1, 2018). Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. For refugees under the Geneva Convention (1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol), the refugee procedure (i.e. before refugee status is conferred) will not be counted as ‘period of residence/activity in the country of the beneficiary’.

Also, the positions are reserved to Early Stage researchers: the candidates shall, at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-Time Equivalent Research Experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited or seconded, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is or was ever envisaged.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The recruitment procedure comprises two steps: assessment by the node leaders and members of the COSINE supervisory board at a recruitment meeting in Heidelberg in May 2018, as well as formal acceptance as PhD student at DTU. Passing both steps is mandatory.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary is in accordance to the standardized EU rules for Marie Sklodowska-Curie ETN fellows. The appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degrees students.

The period of employment is 3 years. The expected starting date is September 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.
