A 3-year PhD scholarship in experimental studies of functional polymer films is available at the Department of Chemistry. The project will be under supervision of Professor Esben Thormann and is starting at September 1st as soon as possible hereafter.

The PhD project will focus on investigations of how different constellations of fixed and mobile charges in a polymeric film can lead to a local freezing point depression close to the polymer interface and how formation of a so-called quasi-liquid layer of water between the polymer film and an adhered ice layer can lead to a reduction in ice adhesion strength. A special focus will be on polymer synthesis, surface film designs, film characterization and test of functionalities but the project will also include design and construction of new experimental set ups for anti-icing measurements.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a Master degree in physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, soft matter or equivalent. Candidates who have experience with synthesis of polyelectrolytes, surface grafting techniques and/or characterization techniques like AFM, QCM-D and ellipsometry will be preferred. The candidate should further be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working. Only applicants with great talent, who seeks to be among the brightest in their field, will be considered.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
